In sixth grade, my art teacher asked us to close our eyes and "imagine you are in a forest." All I saw was the blood-red light filtering through my eyelids. While my classmates described vivid scenes filled with towering trees and dappled sunlight, I relied on other senses—the crispness of the forest air, the dampness of the soil under my feet, the distant chirping of birds high above.

Finally able to capture life as I saw it, at the end of each week, I transferred the photos to my computer and paired each image with a story detailing my thoughts and sensations.

Though aphantasia took away my ability to visualize, photography and storytelling gave me a way to preserve and relive my most precious moments.

Laughter filled the room as we relived each moment—the stumble over a tree root, the tallest tree that any of us had ever seen, the sudden downpour that soaked us all."
